💡 Pro Tip: Public Hospital Class A

Expats pay unsubsidized rates at public hospitals. Choose Class A (single room) for privacy comparable to private hospitals, but at lower cost. You get the same excellent doctors at 30-40% less than private hospital prices.

How to Choose Your Obstetrician

Key Considerations

  • Hospital privileges: Ensure they deliver at your preferred hospital
  • Experience: Ask about years of practice and specialty areas
  • Communication style: Find someone you're comfortable asking questions
  • Availability: Who covers if your doctor is unavailable during delivery?
  • Philosophy: Natural birth supportive? C-section rates?
  • Languages: Important if English isn't your first language

Questions to Ask

  • • What is your approach to pain management?
  • • How do you handle emergencies/complications?
  • • What is your C-section rate?
  • • Do you support water births/specific birth plans?
  • • What are your fees? (Consultation + delivery package)
  • • How can I reach you outside office hours?

💡 Tip: Meet 2-3 ob-gyns before deciding. Most offer initial consultations where you can assess compatibility. Ask friends and expat groups for recommendations.

Protection

Maternity Insurance Guide

Important: Standard health insurance typically DOES NOT cover normal pregnancy and delivery. You need specific maternity coverage, and it comes with significant waiting periods.

⚠️ Critical: Waiting Periods Apply

Maternity insurance has mandatory waiting periods of 10-24 months before benefits kick in. This means you need to purchase coverage well before getting pregnant. If you're already pregnant, you typically cannot add maternity coverage.

→ Plan ahead: Get maternity insurance 1-2 years before you plan to conceive.

What Maternity Insurance Covers

  • Normal Delivery: Hospital stay, delivery fees, doctor fees
  • C-Section: When medically necessary
  • Complications: Pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, etc.
  • Pre/Post-natal Care: Consultations, scans, tests
  • Newborn Coverage: First 30-90 days for baby

Typically NOT Covered

  • Elective C-Section: Without medical necessity
  • IVF/Fertility Treatments: Assisted conception
  • Pre-existing Conditions: Known pregnancy complications
  • Congenital Defects: Some plans exclude this
  • Room Upgrades: Beyond covered ward class

Maternity Insurance Options

⭐ RECOMMENDED

Standalone Maternity Plans

Specific pregnancy coverage designed for maternity needs. Affordable option with cash payouts or coverage benefits.

  • ✓ Affordable premiums
  • ✓ Cash benefits on delivery
  • ✓ Pregnancy complications covered
  • ✓ Shorter waiting periods

Maternity with Bundled Plans

Maternity benefits bundled with protection plans like ILP or whole life insurance. Long-term savings with maternity coverage.

  • ✓ Combines protection + maternity
  • ✓ Cash value accumulation
  • ✓ Coverage for mother & child
  • ⚠️ Higher commitment required
Premium: $3,000-$8,000/year

International Health Insurance

Most comprehensive option. Global coverage with maternity benefits added. Waiting period: typically 10-12 months.

  • ✓ Comprehensive prenatal care
  • ✓ Delivery at private hospitals
  • ✓ Newborn automatic coverage
  • ⚠️ Higher premiums
Premium: $8,000-$20,000/year

Entitlements

Maternity & Paternity Leave

Singapore offers statutory maternity and paternity leave, but entitlements differ significantly between Citizens/PRs and foreigners. Here's what you need to know.

Maternity Leave

Singapore Citizens & PRs

16 Weeks Paid Leave

  • • First 8 weeks: Employer pays (capped at $10,000/4 weeks)
  • • Last 8 weeks: Government reimburses employer (capped at $10,000/4 weeks)
  • • Flexible usage within 12 months of birth
  • • Must have worked 3+ months before delivery

Foreigners (Work Pass Holders)

Depends on Employment Contract

  • • No statutory government-paid maternity leave
  • • Entitled to unpaid maternity leave under Employment Act
  • • Check your employment contract for company policy
  • • Many MNCs offer paid maternity leave as benefit

Paternity Leave

Singapore Citizens (Child is SC)

2 Weeks Paid Leave

  • • Government-paid (capped at $2,500/week)
  • • Flexible usage within 12 months of birth
  • • Must be married and worked 3+ months

PRs (Child is PR/SC)

2 Weeks (Employer-Paid)

  • • Employer pays (no government reimbursement)
  • • Same eligibility criteria as citizens

Foreigners

Company Policy Only

  • • No statutory entitlement
  • • Check employment contract
  • • Many companies offer 1-2 weeks

💜 Shared Parental Leave (for Citizens)

Working fathers who are Singapore Citizens can share up to 4 weeks of the mother's 16 weeks maternity leave. This is in addition to the 2 weeks paternity leave, giving fathers potentially 6 weeks of leave.

Note: Requires mutual agreement between parents. Mother must be eligible for maternity leave benefits.

💡 Pro Tip for Expat Parents

If your employer doesn't offer paid maternity leave, negotiate! Many companies are willing to provide benefits beyond statutory requirements to retain talent. Check if your company has a global parental leave policy that might apply to you.

After Baby Arrives: What to Do

Congratulations! Once your baby arrives, there are important administrative tasks and planning considerations. Here's your post-birth checklist.

✅ Within 14 Days

  • 1. Register Birth

Must register within 14 days at ICA. Hospital usually assists with this. Birth certificate will be issued.

  • 2. Apply for Baby's Passport

Apply at your embassy/consulate for baby's citizenship documents if not Singaporean.

  • 3. Notify Your Employer

Confirm maternity leave start date and any benefits claims.

  • 4. Get Baby on Insurance

Add baby to your health insurance policy. Most require notification within 30 days.

📅 Within First Month

  • 5. Register with Pediatrician

Choose a pediatrician for ongoing care and vaccinations. First check-up usually 1-2 weeks after birth.

  • 6. Apply for Dependant's Pass (if needed)

If you're on a work pass, apply for baby's Dependant's Pass through your employer.

  • 7. Set Up Bank Account

Open a children's savings account to start saving for baby's future.

  • 8. Look into Insurance for Baby

Consider hospital insurance, critical illness cover, and education savings plans.

Monthly childcare

Child Health

Vaccination Schedule

Singapore has a National Childhood Immunisation Schedule. Vaccinations are available at polyclinics, GP clinics, and hospitals.

Age Vaccinations Est. Cost (Private)
Birth BCG, Hepatitis B (1st dose) Hospital fee
1 month Hepatitis B (2nd dose) $30-$60
2 months 6-in-1 (DTaP-IPV-Hib-HepB), Pneumococcal, Rotavirus $200-$350
4 months 6-in-1 (2nd dose), Pneumococcal (2nd), Rotavirus (2nd) $200-$350
6 months 6-in-1 (3rd dose), Pneumococcal (3rd), Rotavirus (3rd - if needed) $200-$350
12 months MMR (1st dose), Pneumococcal booster, Varicella (Chickenpox) $200-$350
15-18 months MMR (2nd dose), DTaP booster $150-$250
10-11 years Tdap booster, HPV (2 doses for girls) $80-$400
Annually Influenza (recommended) $30-$50

💡 Save on Vaccinations

Polyclinics offer vaccinations at subsidized rates (for children of citizens/PRs). Even for foreigners, polyclinic prices are often 30-50% cheaper than private clinics.

📱 Track Vaccinations

Use the HealthHub app to track your child's vaccination records. All vaccinations administered in Singapore are automatically recorded in the National Immunisation Registry.

Immigration

Nationality & Citizenship for Your Child

A child born in Singapore doesn't automatically become a Singapore citizen. Citizenship depends on the parents' status. Here's what you need to know.

🇸🇬 Singapore Citizenship by Birth

Your child is a Singapore citizen at birth if:

  • At least one parent is a Singapore Citizen at time of birth
  • Parents are lawfully married (or child legitimized within 12 months)

For unwed parents: Child can acquire citizenship through the SC mother. For SC father, child must be legitimized by marriage.

🔵 Child of Permanent Residents

If both parents are PRs (not citizens), your child born in Singapore is:

  • NOT automatically a Singapore citizen
  • Can apply for PR status after birth
  • Will hold parents' citizenship initially

To apply for PR for your child: Apply through ICA website. Processing time: 4-6 months typically.

🌏 Child of Foreigners (Work Pass Holders)

If neither parent is SC/PR, your child born in Singapore:

Immediate Steps

  • 1. Register birth at ICA (within 14 days)
  • 2. Apply for baby's passport at your embassy
  • 3. Apply for Dependant's Pass (via employer)
  • 4. Register with your home country

PR Application (Optional)

  • • Can apply after parents become PR
  • • Or apply as a family group
  • • Processing time: 4-12 months

⚠️ Important: Singapore Does NOT Allow Dual Citizenship

If your child is a Singapore citizen, they must renounce any other citizenship by age 22. Male citizens must complete National Service (NS) before renouncing.

Key Considerations:

  • • Children with dual citizenship must choose one nationality by age 22
  • • Male children who are SC must serve NS before renouncing
  • • Some countries allow "re-acquisition" of citizenship later
  • • Consult your embassy about your home country's rules
